Useful information

Your NHS employer updates your NHS Pension record once a year. This allows us to provide you with a new Annual Benefits Statement (ABS). Your ABS shows how your pension pot is increasing and what benefits you may claim at your Normal Retirement Age (NRA).

You can view your ABS in My NHS Pension. If you use the Electronic Staff Record (ESR), it will also appear in your Total Reward Statements.

If you do not have an ABS, you can view our Getting an estimate of your pension webpage for more information.

Your NHS Pension Scheme membership number

All NHS Pension Scheme members have an 8-digit membership number. You can find it at the top of any letters we've sent you. Older letters may show it like ‘SD 00 / 123456’. This older format is being replaced with an 8-digit membership number.

If you have an ‘Agenda for Change’ NHS contract, your membership number may also be at the bottom of your payslip.

If you also have pension benefits relating to a pension credit, dependant’s pension, or other NHS Pension Scheme provision, you may have more than one membership number.

It will help us if you provide the correct membership number when contacting us. If you do not know your membership number, you can provide your National Insurance number instead.

If you email us from a personal account, be careful with the personal information you include as this is at your own risk.

My NHS Pension

My NHS Pension is an online portal which you can use to view and manage your NHS Pension in one place.

Active and deferred members can use it to check their pension details. Pensioner members can also use it to view their pension payment information. To find out how to register and learn more about the service, visit our My NHS Pension webpage.

If you have left NHS employment, you should contact us to provide you with an estimate.

 Pension Scams

Your pension is one of your main sources of income in retirement, so it can be a target for scammers. It’s important to protect your pension pot and know how to spot the signs of a scam.

For more information on how to keep your pension safe and what to do if you think you've been scammed, visit our dedicated pension scams webpage.

Independent financial advice

NHS Pensions and Pensions Officers cannot give you financial advice.

You should get independent financial advice about the best pension arrangements for you.

Types of advisers

Financial advisers can be either independent or restricted.

Independent financial advisers can offer a range of financial services and products.

Restricted financial advisers can only offer products from one company or a selection of companies.

Before you get advice, make sure you know which type of adviser you’re dealing with. Most advisers charge for their advice.

Finding advisers

Your Pensions Officer may help you find independent financial advice.

For a list of local companies, you can go to:

www.unbiased.co.uk

www.thepfs.org

Check the adviser you've chosen

Anyone offering advice or financial services should be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to give pension or investment advice. You should check they’re on the Financial Services Register.

If a firm is not authorised by the FCA, you cannot use the Financial Ombudsman Scheme or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. This will make it unlikely you can claim if things go wrong.

You can write to the Financial Conduct Authority at:

Financial Conduct Authority,
12 Endeavour Square,
London,
E20 1JN

You can also contact the Financial Conduct Authority by:

Telephone: 0800 111 6768
Website: www.fca.org.uk.
